Who Owns Range Rover and Who Owns Jaguar?
The luxury vehicle companies Range Rover and Jaguar have been around for decades. These companies specialize in premium luxury sought-after vehicles and do a great job of marketing, producing, and selling them. Â
Range Rover’s History
The Range Rover company, now called Land Rover, started producing vehicles in the late 1940s. The first set of cars made were the Land Rover models made by the Rover Company. The Series I Land Rover was created in 1948 and was very popular at this time. The Rover Company then went on to make the Series II in 1958. Around 10 years later, Leyland Motor Corporation bought out the Rover Company and decided to merge with British Motor Holdings. This merger of motor companies created the new owner of the Land Rover company and vehicle under the name British Leyland. Soon after, the Range Rover model was created in 1970, and by 1983, three Range Rover models had been produced. With British Leyland not profitable, the Land Rover and Range Rover lineups continue to go through owners like British Aerospace, BMW, and Ford. Up to date now is the current owner, Tata Motors, who have changed the Land Rover and Range Rover brand forever and helped identify them as premium luxury vehicles. Tata Motors grouped with the Jaguar company in 2012 and continues to do so today.Â
Jaguar’s HistoryÂ
The Jaguar Company’s history dates back to 1922 and started as the Swallow Sidecar Company. The company created the first of many Jaguars in 1932, and they called it SS 1. The SS 1, an acronym for Standard Swallow, was very successful at the time selling 4,200 units. From 1935 to 1940, the company created 3 new models. The company then changed its name to S.S. Cars Limited. In 1945, the company changed its name to Jaguar Cars Limited due to offensiveness with the abbreviation SS. In 1965, Jaguar Car Limited merged with the company British Motor Holdings Limited and, just 19 years later, branched off into their own solar company again. Along with the purchase of Land Rover, Ford also purchased Jaguar which resulted in both companies being sold to Tata Motors which is the current owner and has been since 2008. Through Tata Motors, the two brands merged into one making the label Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) that we know today.Â
Bob Moore Jaguar Land Rover represents and carries on the history of how these two brands collided to make two of the most sought-after luxury vehicle lineups.Â
